Warning Signs

Soreness, smarting, throbbing, spasm, anguish, twinge are all words that describe how we feel when things just are not right.  These are words that usually describe how people feel for weeks before they limp into my office.  My bet that you are one of them.  I hear "I thought it would go away" "It wasn't something that I could not deal with" and then they come into the office in severe pain that is now limiting there life. The dull aches that are dealt with in some people every day is a WARNING sign.  It is no different than the oil light on your cars dash board lighting up.  Lets ask the question what happens when you ignore that light? I will tell you nothing good happens.  The same thing happens with the spine or other joints in the body when you ignore the dull ache that is a result of increased stress on the structure the structure starts to wear differently and can cause things like degeneration, arthritis, disc herniation, and severe muscle spasms.  These things can over time cause significant health concerns as it relates to the spine resulting in surgeries and pain that may never go away.

What you need to do is NOT WAIT and see if things get better it is easier to treat when it is in the beginning stages than to wait till you can not move.  Many people say well it is just muscle.  What is that muscle attached to (it's the Bones). When the muscle is pulling or in spasm it is shifting the pressure on the bone and joint thus shifting it out of ideal alignment.  So even if it is muscle the alignment can still effect how quickly you  feel better GET IT ADJUSTED.  Contrary to popular belief I don't like to see people in pain I want you to come in for a couple visits and feel better right away I do not like seeing you 8 to 12 times (no offence) but I would rather see you 1 to 3 times with a smile on your face and stating how wonderful you have felt.  Look at chiropractic and life as a maintenance of health and not at treating a disease it is going to save you thousands in the long run.  This practice of maintenance is not only for the back and joints but the concept can be used for every aspect of life at times a very hard thing to do but one of the best life styles any person can implement.  Your Partner in Health.  Dr.  Nathan

Battle Scars

For almost 10 years, I have heard people talk about the pills that they take or the surgeries they had as if it was a badge of honor. I have seen people identify themselves by the treatments and drugs they take. What amazes me everyday is that as a whole our society believes that this is normal and that our body is set up for failure. Is it just attention or ignorance? Are we so brainwashed into believing that God designed our bodies to be hunks of junk waiting for common man to fix it? I come from the the school of the power that made the body can heal the body if we allow it. I am telling you that we need to step up and take responsibility for our health. If you don't exercise, eat right, and do regular maintenance, you have no right to blame the body for failure.

The decisions you make everyday and I mean everyday lead you down a road to health or disease. I see people spend more time and effort maintaining their car than their own body and the excuse is that the car is a huge investment. There is no BIGGER investment than your own body. You can always buy a new car you can never get a new body (you can not put a price on health). In this country, we spend if you average it out $3100 per person every year on disease care. This is because we do not do anything to our bodies until we are sick or in pain this is like not changing the oil in your car until the engine blows. Our bodies are resilient but after 20 to 30 years of abuse it will not hold up that is why I encourage everyone to make smart decisions with food and exercise everyday.

I know what you are going to say I don't have the time to eat right because of work or exercise because of the kids sports or go to the chiropractor because of our schedules don't match up. I am here to tell you that if you don't make time then your body will force you to react to the disease that has been brewing from years of abuse.

I care about every single person that comes in to see me and for the ones that are yet to see me. My hopes and dreams are to see masses of people free from diseases and preventable surgeries, but if we don't start changing our ways then the cost of health care (disease maintenance) will sky rocket. Just something to think about. Your partner in health. Dr. Nathan

Don't Listen to Me, Listen to My Patient

Sometimes it's better to hear about treatments from a patients perspective. In the coming weeks we will be posting various testimonials. Don't just take my word for it, take theirs...

Tendonitis

My goal in practice is to educate and inform people about many different conditions that can be treated without drugs and surgery. So I have decided to take one condition a month and explore it this month we are studying Tendinitis. Tendinitis is a condition that effects people from little league to golf to the factory to the gardener and everyone in between. It is a basic inflammatory process that effects the tendons of most commonly the shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, ankle and knee. This condition can be debilitating if let go and can cause serious loss of function in the joint.

The condition can be caused by repetitive stress to a specific joint and tendon. You may have heard the condition Golfer elbow and Tennis elbow a condition closely associated with tendinitis. We offer treatments that help your body reduce inflammation and restore function to the specific joint that is effected. I am going to discuss the process by which we treat the condition and what each treatment offers in the healing process.

1. Chiropractic care - chiropractic can and is done on any joint in the body not just the spine. Chiropractic care in the extremities is done for the sole purpose of realigning the joint so that it functions more efficiently ultimately reducing stress to the surrounding structures ie. Tendons.

2. Cold Laser - also called Low Level laser therapy is a process of using light to quickly and effectively heal the tissue in many cases 300 x faster than it would naturally. It works by stimulating the mitochondria of the cell which is the energy producer of the cell thus allowing more energy for healing.

3. TENS - this process uses a machine that stimulates the muscle of the affected tendon to relax the muscle and pump out the inflammation in the tendon. allowing for reduced pain and increased healing.

4. Ultrasound - this is a therapeutic ultrasound and not to be confused with the type of ultrasound used on pregnant women. This type reduces inflammation and causes a healing process to occur by stimulating blood flow to the area.

5. Nutrition - this is that old saying you are what you eat. If you eat crap you feel like crap. The western diet is full of foods that promote inflammation. The short of it is change your diet. There are also supplements that can help reduce the inflammation process these need to be specific for the patient so a consult in the office needs to be done. This consultation can be done the same day as the adjustment.

6. Kineseotape - This is a taping procedure that can be done to the joint which decreases inflammation by promotion lymph drainage and reducing muscle spasms. The process is done about every 7 days and usually only needs to be done 2-3 times.

I just presented a few of the most common non-surgical and non-prescription based protocols for reducing the pain and inflammation in the tendon. Remember that all these procedures listed above involve your own body's ability to heal which means everyone responds a little differently and the results are not immediate, but what you do get is no adverse side effects from drugs, no adhesions from surgery, and the assurance that when symptoms are reduced you truly have healed the condition and not just treated a symptom. Until next time.... Your partner in health.. Dr. Nathan

Don't Be Fooled

Don't be fooled by the Snake Oil salesman. The snake oil peddler became a stock character in Western movies: a traveling "doctor" in the back of a wagon with great communication skills and a unique gift of trust and empathy selling some medicine, often supported by pseudo-scientific evidence, to desperate people in search of an answer or a cure from their sickness or pain.

The snake oil salesman are just not in the western movies they are real and are more numerous currently than at any other time in history. We see the marketing everyday from our computers, television, billboards, newspapers, and even your doctors office. We are slowly being brain washed by the greedy. They targeted the sick and weak and promise them health and strength with millions no wait billions of dollars spent to reach out and promise what they can never deliver.

You think I am wrong look at the stats...

In a article published by Gagnon M-A, Lexchin J (2008):The Cost of Pushing Pills. An accounting study based on the annual reports of ten of the largest global pharmaceutical firms, Lauzon and Hasbani showed that between 1996 and 2005, these firms globally spent a total of US$739 billion on “marketing and administration.” In comparison, these same firms spent US$699 billion in manufacturing costs, US$288 billion in R&D, and had a net investment in property and equipment of US$43 billion, while receiving US$558 billion in profits. (Lauzon L-P, Hasbani M (2006) Analyse socio-économique: industrie pharmaceutique mondiale pour la période de dix ans 1996–2005. Montreal: Chaire d'études socio-économiques de l'UQAM.)

We are basically being told to forget about the physiology (study of how the body works) and put all your trust into Pharmacology (medicine) and you will be better Stronger and faster than you were before. BULL CRAP.... That is the reason why every time you take a medication there is a side effect. Even though you get a desired effect there is always something that is not desired that is lurking around the corner (side effect). We ignore the warnings on the labels because we think "that will never happen to me". We continue to follow the marketing and believe that the pharmaceuticals are good and that they are looking out for our best interest. when in all actuality they want to line their own pockets with your misery.

I hope this will raise some questions about health and when you have some questions I know where you can go to get them answered. Your partner in Health. Dr. Nathan

Health in Motion

Everyday you are either move toward health or towards disease constantly walking in a gray area between total health and Sickness. Most people believe that they are in complete health and then just wake up one day with something like diabetes. The fact of the matter is every decision that is made throughout the whole day is either bringing you closer to health of pushing you away. You have to think of health as a marathon race slow and steady. It is extremely hard to wait to become healthier after you have spent 20 years building plaque in arteries or destroying the liver with drugs and alcohol. With that being said, it is never too late to do something the only set back is that sometimes there is damage done that can not be reversed. However, changing now will (no matter how old or how much damage is done) improve your health.

I want to take a few minutes and discuss a few quick checks that you can do immediately that will improve your health.

1. Throw out all your Pop. (diet or fully sugared) you need to get rid all of it.

2. Get out and do some sort of Exercise - our society is a more sedentary place now and as a whole we do not get the activity that we need make it a point to do 15 minutes everyday of something (walk, stretch, Yoga anything) I hear the excuse I am too tired by the end of the day to do the exercising. Then do it in the mourning and before you know it you will have all kinds of energy.

3. Eat Fruits and Veggies - Don't go through that drive through and get another burger and fries. Our bodies were designed to eat and process fruits and Vegetables and not all the chemicals and fats that our in the non-nutritious fast foods.

4. Get a partner to help keep you accountable. Myself I have people to keep me accountable for exercising and I have an app on my I-Pod that keeps me accountable on my diet. these things are necessities for health.

5. Don't forget the most important health change of all its me (Dr. Nathan) I am here any time you want to discuss health issues related to Vitamins, nutrition, and diet I would love to not only keep your spine in line but also your health.

For more inspiration or to keep you motivated we now have a twitter account and facebook account that has daily tips. Don't forget to check those out daily for just that little extra motivation that we all need at times. I am putting a lot of effort into a complete support system for all so that I can say I have the healthiest patients of any clinic in the united states.
